Grape Dumplings


2 cups flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
2 T sugar
1/4 t salt
1T shortening
1/2 cup milk

2-4 cups red grape juice

Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Cut shortening into the flour mixture. Add milk and mix into stiff dough. Drop by teaspoons into boiling grape juice and cook for 10-20 minutes.


This is a traditional Cherokee Native American dish made with homemade grape juice that is thick and pulpy. You can achieve similar results with purchased juice by simmering the juice, sweeten to taste, add a thickener or more dumplings depending on the sauce/dumpling ratio you prefer.

Jiffy mix can be used to replace the flour, baking powder, salt and shortening. It makes a lighter dumpling. 
2 cups Jiffy mix, 2 T sugar, 1/2 cup milk.
